Udhagamandalam: Having fulfilled a long felt need in the realm of higher education in this hill station the St.Joseph’s College of Education is all set to celebrate its first College Day on Saturday.

In keeping with the record of the Ootacamund Diocese in the field of education, the college - first of its kind in the Nilgiris district - came into being on November 14,2007 after getting the nod of the Bharathiar University and the National Council of Teachers Education (NCTE).

Listing its salient features and objectives, the Correspondent of the College Edward told press persons here on Thursday that such an institution was necessary here because the Nilgiris district with about 162 private and government schools needed well qualified and trained teachers.

It was a well known fact that many of the teachers from the plains who were posted in various parts of the Nilgiris were either reluctant to join or left soon. Hence it was necessary to have a college which offered B.Ed course. Stating that it was a self financing institution with a sanctioned strength of 100, the principal M.K.Sachidananthan said that an increase in the intake can be considered only after three years. Preference in admission will be given for local candidates. The Chief Guest at the first College Day celebrations will be the Vice Chancellor, Bharathiar University G.Thiruvasagam.
