Collector seeks judicious use of energy sources

It is the responsibility of the current generation to spare resources for the ones to come

ERODE: Collector R. Sudalaikannan has urged judicious use of energy sources.

Addressing participants at a meeting organised to mark Rajiv Gandhi Renewable Energy Day at the Collectorate here on Tuesday, he said, “As technologies to use alternative, renewable energy sources are still under development and there is a long way to go, what can be done immediately to save the environment is judiciously use existing energy sources.”

“Some of the new technology may be costly; it may take time to enter the market and be used by the majority but till then the job of environment protection cannot wait.”

Depleting resources

He urged people to treat their homes and offices as one in saving electricity, as people in the past 200 years had looted earth’s natural resources that were built up over thousands of years.

According to a study, Mr. Sudalaikannan said, in the past two centuries 50 per cent of the planet’s resources had been used and the consuming the rest half might not take as much time.

It might get over in another 50 or 100 years.

He also urged people to walk and cycle as much as possible to reduce dependency on petrol and diesel. “People have come to think that travelling in car or motorcycle will give the impression that they belong to affluent section. The truth is that they are polluting environment,” he said and asked people to reduce dependency on vehicles. M.D. Thirumoorthy of Tamil Nadu Energy Development Agency, Coimbatore, said it was the responsibility of the current generation to spare resources and protect environment for the generations to come.

Fossil fuel

He said the need was all the more now to reduce dependence on fossil fuels, which at present provide 80 per cent of our energy requirements.

Chief Education Officer Pon. Kumar spoke on the Country’s various renewable energy projects.

Project Officer, DRDA, S.S. Kumar welcomed the gathering.

Prizes

As part of the celebrations Collector Mr. Sudalaikannan gave away prizes to Kattur Tamizh Chezhian and R. Kaarthika who stood first and second in oratorical competitions organised as part of the event.

He also gave away prizes to winners of essay writing and painting competitions.
