Scheme to be implemented in four phases in Dindigul

Each panchayat to get Rs.50 lakh

Rs.3-cr. plan will cover all 24 bodies

DINDIGUL: Collector R. Vasuki on Saturday said infrastructure would be strengthened in six town panchayats, under the All Town Panchayats Anna Renaissance Scheme, at a cost of Rs.3 crore.

Talking to mediapersons at Batlagundu after inspecting development works at Chithayankottai and Pattiveeranpatti town panchayats here, she said the scheme would be implemented in four phases to cover all 24 town panchayats.

In the first phase, Iyyalur, Balasamudram, Chithayankottai, Ammayanaickanur, Sri Ramapuram and Palayam town panchayats had been selected. Each panchayat would get Rs.50 lakh and undergo a complete facelift.

Development works would be taken up by converging the resources of different departments. Works such as augmentation of drinking water supply, fitting up of streetlights with compact fluorescent bulbs and establishment of community halls would be implemented.

In addition, strengthening of concrete roads and creation of ponds, burial grounds, sports and recreation facilities and village markets would also be taken up. Town panchayats could also select the works based on their infrastructure requirements.

Ms. Vasuki suggested that executive officers of the town panchayats give top priority to solid waste management also. A mega compost yard for Oddanchatram town panchayat would come up shortly, with the participation of a non-governmental organisation, she said. Besides, a gas-based crematorium would be set up at an estimated cost of Rs.44 lakh. Proposals had also be sent for upgrading it to municipality.

Following the sharp fall in rainfall, top priority was given for augmenting drinking water supply. A sum of Rs.13 lakh would be spent for digging supply wells for Nilakottai town panchayat. Three deep bore wells would be sunk near the Athoor dam to improve drinking water supply to Chinnalapatti town panchayat at a cost of Rs.16 lakh. Seven bore wells would be sunk on the foothills of Sirumalai to ensure adequate drinking water supply to Ammayanaickanur, she said.
