Collector distributes welfare assistance

TIRUCHI: Collector T. Soundiah on Thursday distributed welfare assistance of Rs.22.56 lakh for 300 beneficiaries under various welfare schemes at the mass contact programme held at Peruvalapur panchayat in Lalgudi taluk in Tiruchi district.

Presiding over the meeting, the Collector said that all basic amenities were provided in Peruvalapur panchayat and pointed out that the Government was according priority for providing all amenities in rural areas.

Main objective

He said that the main objective of conducting mass contact programmes was to ensure that all the welfare schemes implemented by the Government reached the rural areas.

The Collector said that under the 100-day National Rural Employment Guarantee (NREG) Scheme, most of the agricultural labourers and casual workers in the district were getting employment and getting wages ranging from Rs.80 to 100 per day.

He explained in detail the Government's Kalaignar Housing Scheme launched for those living in thatched houses in poromboke lands.

Insurance scheme

Mr. Soundiah pointed out that a large number of people in Tiruchi district benefited under Kalaignar's Health Insurance Scheme for Life Saving Treatments and said that 3,450 persons underwent surgeries and other treatment so far and the Government had spent Rs.7.50 crore for this purpose.

He said that free house site pattas, old age pension, free colour television sets and domestic LPG gas connection and stoves were being distributed.

Pullambadi panchayat union chairman Jayaprakash, Tiruchi district panchayat members Selvaraj and Thiagarajan, Peruvalappur panchayat president Arivukodi, Lalgudi Revenue Divisional Officer M. Thangavelu also spoke.
