RASIPURAM: The district administration distributed free house sites to 851 beneficiaries through the district backward class and minorities welfare department in the last two years, Collector G.Sundaramurthi said.

Participating at a function at Thuthikulam village near here on Saturday, the Collector said that the administration procured 26.36 acres of private lands to provide free house sites to the beneficiaries. A sum of Rs. 49 lakh was spent for this purpose. The department also extended scholarships to the tune of Rs. 6.27 crore to 71,202 students in the last two years. Free bicycles were given to 7,902 students. Sewing machines worth Rs. 4 lakh were given to 138 persons, he added. The administration distributed loans to the tune of Rs. 5 crore to 3,806 persons through the Tamil Nadu Backward Classes Economic Development Corporation to take up micro and small industries. Besides, 762 persons were extended a sum of Rs. 86 lakh as loans through the Tamil Nadu Minorities Economic Development Corporation Limited. Mr. Sundaramurthi further said that the administration established an association to extend assistance to the Muslim women to take up income generation activities and enhance their quality of life. The Collector handed over free house site pattas worth Rs. 8.15 lakh to 151 persons belonging to minority communities during the function. He assured that the administration would create necessary amenities including drinking water supply provisions, roads and street lights, if the beneficiaries completed the construction of houses within six months from now on the allotted site. He also distributed free sewing machines. District Revenue Officer G. Govindaraj, District Backward Classes Welfare Officer R. Madheswaran and senior officials were present.
