Chennai: The audience sat entranced as Jeyakirubai of Class IV attempted reciting a Bible passage with 100 verses. Though she could not complete it, her enthusiasm was lauded.

The recitation was part of a Christmas programme organised here on Saturday by charitable organisation Samiti for Education, Environment, Social and Health Action.

New clothes were given to 2,007 children from slums across the country. Minister for Animal Husbandry Geetha Jeevan and SEESHA Managing Trustee Paul Dhinakaran gave away the clothes to around 300 children in Chennai.

About 20 widows were also given financial assistance and two students educational grants.

SEESHA has adopted nine slums in the city and finances the education of deserving students and provides free vocational training for the youth. Ms. Jeevan said Christmas did not mean just celebration and fun — it was also a season to share.
