CHENNAI: If you are among those who change jewellery to suit the occasion, then a jewellery exposition to be held at Chennai Trade Centre, Nandambakkam, in February next year should interest you.

The exhibition, to be conducted by Gem and Jewellery India International Exhibition, will bring to the city jewellery from China, Thailand, Indonesia and Hong Kong. The emphasis will be on silver and platinum jewellery, said Uday Kumar Vummidi, chairman of Gem and Jewellery India International Exhibition. A memorandum was signed by representatives of the Madras Jewellery and Diamond Merchants’ Association and M. Gandhi, managing director of CMP India, on Saturday. Chennai was chosen to host the exhibition, given the quality consciousness among jewellery buyers here.

“South Indians have a keen knowledge when it comes to diamond and gold. The diamonds owned and sold in the south are of far superior quality when compared to those sold in the north,” Mr. Vummidi said.

The exhibition is expected to attract 12,000 visitors, mostly retailers, from across the globe. The trade show, which will have groups of countries and individual exhibitors taking part, would help develop business, according to Association president Pravin M. Mehta.
