TIRUNELVELI: The Communist Party of India has retained the Tenkasi (Reserved) constituency in the district as its candidate P. Lingam comfortably defeated Congress candidate G. Vellaipandi by a margin of 34,677 votes.

While Mr. Lingam garnered 2.81 lakh votes, the Congress candidate got 2.46 lakh votes. Puthiya Thamizhagam president K. Krishnasamy, who fought the electoral battle with the backing of Manithaney Makkal Katchi and the indirect support of actor R. Sarath Kumar’s Akhila India Samaththuva Makkal Katchi and actor M. Karthik’s Akhila India Naadaalum Makkal Katchi, polled 1.16 lakh votes and was pushed to the third spot. DMDK candidate K. Inbaraj received over 75,000 votes even though actor Vijaykanth’s party contested the election without any electoral alliance.

Maintaining comfortable lead from the beginning, Mr. Lingam got significant votes from Srivilliputtur, Rajapalayam, Sankarankovil and Vasudevanallur Assembly segments, all now being represented by CPI, AIADMK and MDMK MLAs, while Mr. Vellaipandi could get more votes in Tenkasi and Kadayanallur Assembly segments. Speaking to reporters on the premises of Sri Parasakthi College for Women at Courtallam even as the counting was going on, Mr. Lingam said that he would strive hard to get industrial investments to this most backward constituency.
