CEO’s directive to Madurai Collector

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The Chief Electoral Officer, Naresh Gupta, has asked the District Collector of Madurai and District Election Officer (DEO) to mount vigil against the practice of some political parties to field dummy candidates to mask their campaign expenditure for the Thirumangalam Assembly by-election.

In a letter to the officials, Mr. Gupta pointed to the large number of independent candidates in the fray.

The Election Commission of India has noted that quite often dummy candidates are set up to further the interest of some party candidates with a view to hoodwinking on the expenditure ceiling, he said.

“This will require close tracking to see whether they are campaigning for themselves or for some party candidate.”

In case of violation of the code, authorities should cancel the vehicle permit after serving notice, he said.

Mr. Gupta also asked the Madurai DEO to pass on the instructions to the Returning Officer of the constituency.
