Addressing journalists here on Monday, she said that the cooperatives had been selling firecrackers for the past 25 years with sales increasing by at least Rs. 15 lakh every year.

This year, the Pandiyan Supermarket was targeting sales of Rs. 75 lakh with the remaining seven primary cooperatives that it supplies looking at a sales of Rs. 25 lakh. While the current year’s combined sales target was Rs. 1 crore, it was Rs. 65 lakh last year.

Schools students were being offered six per cent concession through coupons distributed at several schools. Students could bring a bona fide certificate of schools and claim the concession. Further, this year computerised billing had been introduced at the supermarket. Prizes were also given out through draw by lots every day for purchase above Rs. 1,000.

The supermarket would remain open round-the-clock during the three days preceding Deepavali. The Joint Registrar appealed to the public to make use of the subsidised rates and buy crackers at these stores.
