A sum of Rs. 3.5 lakh sanctioned under Hill Area Development Programme

Udhagamandalam: The Conservatory, one of the most prominent features of the Government Botanical Garden (GBG) here is now in the process of being given a fresh lease of life.

Located in a secluded spot in the upper part of the GBG the conservatory came into being several decades ago to exhibit plants that grow under diffused light and controlled conditions.

Over the years the facility has not only been a major source of knowledge and inspiration for students of botany but also been one of the main attractions inside the GBG which is the most popular tourist spot in the Nilgiris.

The conservatory in the garden, with its beautiful collection of flowers has figured in a large number of movies.

Stating that due to various factors the structure had developed a number of problems, the Assistant Engineer, Agricultural Engineering, N.Kumar, told The Hindu here on Wednesday that a sum of Rs. 3.5 lakh had been sanctioned by the Hill Area Development Programme (HADP) to improve it.

Shape

Pointing out that without altering its original shape, its roof, windows, etc. had been improved, he said that the floor would be tiled. The work would be finished soon.

The Assistant Director of Horticulture M.Prakasam said that since most of the pots which were inside the conservatory were damaged they would be replaced before the curtain goes up on the tourist season.
