Permits traffic on Amman Sannithi, West and North Tower streets

MADURAI: The Madras High Court Bench on Wednesday directed the Madurai Police Commissioner to make certain modifications in vehicular movement around the Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple here.

A Division Bench comprising Justice F.M. Ibrahim Kalifulla and Justice P. Murgesen ordered to permit two-wheelers, three-wheelers and cars on the entire stretch of Amman Sannithi, West Tower and North Tower streets.

No heavy vehicles

However, it was made clear that the vehicles should not be parked on the streets beyond 10 to 15 minutes and no heavy vehicles, including goods vans, shall enter them.

Traffic management should be taken care of by the residents and traders.

At present, vehicles are not permitted beyond a point where the three streets intersect with the East, West and North Avani Moola streets.

But the Judges directed to move the barricades to the beginning of East, West and North Chithirai streets.

The interim orders were passed in a public interest litigation petition filed by Chithirai Streets and Adjoining Streets Residents’ Welfare Association to allow unrestricted vehicular movement on the four Chithirai streets.

Amicable solution

The Judges observed that the interim orders shall not stand in the way of the petitioner and the respondents (Collector, Police Commissioner and Corporation Commissioner) from holding a meeting to arrive at an amicable solution on the issue.

During arguments, the petitioner’s counsel contended that the traffic movement could not be curtailed on the streets without a valid Government Order.

He said that even an ambulance was not permitted in the streets in cases of emergency.

On the other hand, the Government Advocate argued that traffic restrictions were imposed on the Chithirai streets in view of security threat to the Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple. He also submitted a copy of the intelligence report to drive home his point.
