Be aware of your rights, consumers told

SALEM: Awareness rallies, workshops, seminars and competitions marked the World Consumer Rights Day celebrations in Salem district on Thursday.

Collector N. Mathivanan flagged off a consumer awareness rally at Mahatma Gandhi Stadium organised by the district administration in association with the consumer organisations and Vysya College.

A large number of school and college students participated in the rally, which passed through important thoroughfares in the city. Participants raised slogans asking the consumers to be aware of their rights. The administration also organised an awareness seminar.

Judge, Salem, Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri Consumer Disputes Redressal Forums, S. Sathyamurthi delivered the special address and distributed prizes to the winners of competitions. District Revenue Officer M. Rajarathinam and Revenue Divisional Officer Kaja Mohaideen also spoke.

The Tamil Nadu Consumer Vigilance Council and Jairam Arts and Science College organised a rally in Hasthampatti. Veerapandi MLA A. Raja flagged off the rally. Mayor J. Rekha Priyadarshini and Council Chairman S. Selvam were present. Later, the Collector participated in a seminar held in the college and distributed prizes to the winners of elocution and essay writing competitions.

The Federation for Associations of Consumer and Environment in Tamil Nadu and Consumer Welfare Council conducted a seminar in Government Arts College for Women. In a resolution passed during the programme, members demanded the Centre to ban the sale of genetically engineered seeds. The government should allow the payment of fee through money order and postal order for obtaining information under the Right to Information Act. Salem District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum Member A.S. Swarnambal, Federation president A. Ashokan and Council Secretary P.G. Vidhyasagar spoke. Members of Salem City Consumer Welfare Association distributed handbills on consumer rights and responsibilities.
