Basic foundation training held

NAGAPATTINAM: The State Institute of Rural Development conducted a four-day basic foundation training programme under the Backward Region Grant Fund (BRGF-TN) recently.

The programme under the BRGF entailed sensitisation to Panchayati Raj, Rural Development Schemes, Sanitation, Environment and HIV/AIDS. The programme involved resource persons of the State Institute of Rural Development such as master trainers along with NGOs, village panchayat presidents who are recipients of Uthamar Gandhi Award for best village panchayats and recipients of Nirmal Gram Puraskar awards and PLFs/SHGs that have received Manimegalai Awards.

Four village panchyat clusters of Nagapattinam, Vedaranyam, Kuthalam and Kollidam panchayat unions consisting of 39 village panchayats were covered in the first phase of the basic foundation training. Village president, vice-president, panchayat ward members, panchayat assistants and panchayat level secretaries participated in the training.

Similar training was conducted for panchayat union clusters of Nagapattinam, Kilvelur and Thirumarugal at Vadakkupoigainallur village. For the panchayat union clusters, training was provided to panchayat union chairperson and council members, block development officer, union engineers, deputy block development officers, overseers and road inspectors. The programme for the panchayat cluster was inaugurated by Nagapattinam Panchayat Union Chairperson P. Palanivel.

The programme was coordinated by Lecturer (Behavioural Science), State Institute of Rural Development, Chennai, A. Arputharaj. The programme entailed sharing of experiences by the participants and course kits of folders and books were issued to the trainees.

According to the Project Officer S.Namagiri, District Rural Development Agency, similar training is scheduled to be conducted for the remaining 395 village panchayats and 8 panchayat unions. Under the scheme, administrative sanction has been given for 562 works to the tune of Rs.14.51 crore to rural and urban areas and works are under progress.

The programme envisages capacity building and enhancement to aid development activities in panchayat administration, said Ms. Namagiri.
