BJP demands transparency in constructions

Special Correspondent

COIMBATORE: A meeting of the Engineering Cell of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) here has demanded transparency in the construction of structures by Government agencies. The party held a seminar on “Quality Monitoring in Government Constructions – Rights and Responsibilities” and also launched a ‘People’s Monitoring Committee on Projects’.

A resolution at the meet claimed there were charges of poor quality of structure because of irregularities during construction of roads, buildings and drainage.

Accidents and loss of lives were attributed to the lack of quality.

Apart from the loss of lives, Government funds were also wasted because of the substandard construction.

The Central and State Governments and also local bodies should take steps to ensure transparency and accountability in the implementation of projects.

The meet stressed transparency in the process of inviting and finalising tenders, as there were many complaints in this area. It also called upon the Central Government to establish an autonomous quality control authority to monitor constructions.

The party’s people’s monitoring committee, named “Tharam” (for quality in Tamil), would obtain information under the Right to Information Act from the Government agencies and local bodies to know whether all their projects were being implemented as per rules.

The seminar also called for efforts to prevent damage to roads during political and other function.

A basic infrastructure, roads were dug to put up arches during the meetings.
