Automatic rain gauge stations planned

CHENNAI: The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai, has sent a proposal to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to install a network of 25 automatic rain gauge stations across the city. When installed, the network would help in accurate collection of rainfall data from various parts of the ever expanding city.

Meteorological officials said that once the proposal was approved by the IMD, the network would be installed in several areas, including Anna Nagar, Triplicane, Vandalur, Ambattur, Kelambakkam, Pallikaranai and Porur.

Some rain gauges would also have sensors to measure temperature.

The project is expected to be completed in about a year as part of IMD’s modernisation project aimed at enhancing weather monitoring facilities.

Deputy Director General of Meteorology, RMC, Chennai, Y. E. A. Raj said that the department would set up one automatic weather station and two automatic rain gauge systems in every district in a year.
