Arrangements on for Independence Day celebrations in Salem

Over 2,500 students will perform cultural programmes

SALEM: The district administration is making elaborate arrangements for the Independence Day celebrations to be held at the Mahatma Gandhi Stadium here on August 15.

A team of officials are working round the clock to prepare the stadium for the celebrations.

Police personnel are making heavy security arrangements for the event. The Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad members have already checked the stadium.

More than 2,500 students from 14 schools will perform cultural programmes highlighting national integration and communal harmony.

Several groups of students have already started rehearsals for the dance and drama events. Guided by the teachers and the officials, the students are seen rehearsing for the programmes at the Stadium on Saturday.

Honour

In a press release, Collector N. Mathivanan said freedom fighters would be honoured during the celebrations, which would begin at 8 a.m. Besides, students who secured first mark in the district in the SSLC and the higher secondary examinations would also be honoured. Welfare assistance under various Government schemes would be distributed to selected beneficiaries.

The administration will provide all the necessary amenities to the people attending the celebrations.
