Man arrested

TIRUCHI: A 68-year-old man was arrested on a charge of harassing a woman at Koogoor near Lalgudi on Friday. Kaliyaperumal had allegedly teased girls while they were on their way to their school.

Body found

A body of a man, aged around 65 years, was found at Manapparai on Friday. The identity of the deceased is yet to be established. Based on a complaint from the Village Administrative Officer of Sevalur, the Manapparai police registered a case.

Bootlegger detained

A notorious illicit arrack seller was detained under the Goondas Act on Thursday on the orders of the Commissioner of Police Shankar Jiwal. Velu of Keelapanchapur was involved in several cases of selling illicit arrack mixed with atropine, a toxic material. He was arrested by the Prohibition Enforcement Wing recently. The city police have detained six persons so far this year under Goondas Act.

Phone-in programme

The Tiruchi station of All India Radio, in its main channel, will broadcast special hour-long phone-in programmes to benefit candidates appearing for the forthcoming Plus-Two examinations.

The first programme on English and Zoology will be on air from 10 a.m. on February 18. The second programme to clarify students' doubts in Physics and Chemistry will be broadcast from 11 a.m. on February 25. Candidates can get their doubts in the above subjects clarified by dialling 0431-2416888 or 2411691.

Prohibition order

Commissioner of Police Shankar Jiwal has issued an order prohibiting assemblies, meetings, processions, agitations and demonstrations for a period of 15 days starting 5 p.m. on February 15 to 5 p.m. on March 2 for the preservation of public peace and safety.

Bicycles given away

Free bicycles, under a State Government scheme, were distributed to Plus-One students of Government Adi Dravidar Welfare Girls Higher Secondary at Kattur Pappakurichi near here on Friday. The bicycles were distributed to 206 students in the presence of Tiruverambur MLA K.N. Sekaran and headmaster M. Thirumalaiandi.

SISI campaign

Small Industries Service Institute (SISI), Chennai, in association with Indian Bank will organise an entrepreneurship motivation campaign on February 21 at DRDA Training Centre in the Collectorate. Lectures on opportunities and schemes available for starting small-scale industries would be delivered. Selection of candidates for the month-long programme would be made from those who attended the campaign.

Those who had passed 10th standard and aged 18-35 could register for the campaign at the above-mentioned venue.

Mettur level

The level in the Mettur dam stood at 82.61 feet against its full level of 120 feet on Saturday. The inflow was 231 cusecs and the discharge from the dam was 1,500 cusecs.
