A scheme to increase the green cover will be implemented



Udhagamandalam: The Government is according high priority to afforestation programmes, said the Forest Minister N. Selvaraj on Tuesday.

Private lands

Launching the ‘Tree planting in private lands’ scheme of the Government at Mel Kauhatty near here, he said that soon a scheme to increase the green cover will be implemented in various parts of Tamil Nadu with the help of a Japanese agency.

Water supply

In the Nilgiris 360 hectares of revenue land will shortly come under the forest department. A check-dam would be constructed at Mel Kauhatty to augment water supply to the village.

Rural roads

The Khadi Board Minister K. Ramachandran said that efforts would be made to improve the rural roads including the Ooty-Mel Kauhatty road. Mr. Selvaraj distributed cards to monitor the progress of the scheme and also gave away free dhoties and sarees.

Among those present was the Conservator of Forests R.Kannan. Earler, Mr. Selvaraj participated in a function at Kotagiri to launch the scheme.
