Rally highlights plight of weaker sections of society

A rally and a demonstration were organised here on Thursday under the aegis of the Tamil Nadu Untouchability Eradication Front, the Nilgiris chapter. Among those who participated were the S.K. Mahendran, MLA, and CPI(M) district secretary R.Badri.

In e memorandum submitted to the district administration, the organisation alleged that for the last several years various problems relating to the livelihood of the downtrodden in the Nilgiris have either not been addressed or resolved.

The District Collector should take a personal interest in dealing with the problems, the organisation said.

Probe demanded

In Kamarajapuram and Anniyada of Bearhatty Panchayat, farms belonging to members of the Arundhathiyar community have been illegally taken over by others. The land had been given to them for their socio-economic development. An enquiry should be conducted into this. Pattas should be granted to the families engaged in washing clothes who have been residing for long at Kandhal near here.

A move of the civic administration to evict them should be dropped.

At Bikkani in Adhigaratty Town Panchayat, 34 Dalit families have not been provided with house site pattas. The government should take up their case. A community hall should be constructed in the panchayat.

A road should be provided at Halan nagar in Ketti panchayat.

The system of giving community certificates in the district should be streamlined.
