CHENNAI: The Consumer Protection Department has directed oil companies to take severe action against liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) dealers forcing consumers to purchase articles such as pressure cooker, tea, and soap while availing of gas connections.

It advised LPG consumers to complain to the oil companies if their dealers demanded more than the fixed price for refill. The Chennai District Protection Council, which met here on Friday with council chairman K.Rajaraman presiding, also gave toll free telephone numbers of oil companies for making complaints. (IOC - 1800 233555, BPC – 1800 222725, and HPC – 1800 233777).

The meeting appealed to consumers to make use of temporary commercial cylinder connections for family functions by paying a deposit of Rs.1,500 per cylinder instead of diverting domestic LPGs. The deposit would be given back when the cylinder in returned. It directed the Chennai Corporation Commissioner to register criminal cases against teashop owners in the city found using fake tea leaves.

Mr.Rajaraman asked service providing Central and State government departments to coordinate with voluntary consumer organisations in conducting quarterly meetings regularly to redress consumer grievances.
