: A girl child who was found abandoned at the Tambaram bus terminus on Wednesday morning was rescued and handed over to a welfare centre.

Police said a group of conservancy staff of Tambaram Municipality, who were engaged in clearing garbage at the bus terminus, noticed the child alone and abandoned. They waited for some time, while a few of them went around the terminus to check whether someone was searching for the child.

As none came to the spot in search of the child, they contacted the Tambaram police station. Meanwhile, volunteers from Good Life Centre in West Tambaram came to the spot and took the child to their shelter on Loganathan Street after completing formalities at the police station.

K. Bhaskar, honorary secretary of Good Life Centre, said the child was around 18-months-old. They suspect the child to be suffering from speech and hearing impairment. However, it could be established only after a thorough medical check-up for which they were taking the child to Institute of Child Health and Hospital for Children in Egmore.
