AIADMK stages demonstration at Cuddalore, Villupuram

They want the government to clear arrears to sugarcane growers

CUDDALORE: Activists of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam staged demonstrations in Cuddalore and Villupuram on Monday, urging the government to clear the arrears amounting to Rs 250 crore due to the sugarcane growers.

At Cuddalore, the heavily overcast sky and intermittent rain did not dampen their spirit. Some of the participants removed their shirts and put the symbols on the chest and the back signifying that the authorities were cheating the sugarcane farmers of their payment. Women also participated in significant numbers.

They also carried sugarcane stalks, conveying the message that if the payment was not released soon the farmers would be driven to penury. At Cuddalore, district secretaries M.C.Sampath, former Minister, and A.Arunmozhithevan, MLA, former district secretary Sorathur Rajendran, town secretary G.Kumar and others participated.

At Villupuram, former Ministers Thalavai Sundaram and C.Ve.Shanmugham, MLA, led the demonstration. Kumaraguru and Ganesan, MLAs, also participated.
