ERODE: All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam party men protested on Monday demanding payment of arrears for sugarcane farmers. Led by the party’s Headquarters Secretary K.A. Sengottaiyan, the party men said the current year’s procurement price for a tonne of sugarcane at Rs.222.20 was less than last year’s by 30 paise.

Farmers’ interest

The amount was lesser than what many states offered the farmers, he said and claimed that AIADMK was the only party that fought for the farmers’ interest. He substantiated the point by reminding people of the former Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa’s efforts in getting the sugarcane extraction limit reduced by 1.5 per cent to 8.5 per cent. He then pointed to the Government not implementing the order asking sugar mills to bear the expenses for transporting the cane from fields to their premises.

The order was passed when the AIADMK was in power; he said and slammed the Government for not implementing it.

Mr. Sengottaiyan also criticised the Government for "unannounced power cuts". The general public was affected and, in particular, farmers. Senior party leaders, former MLAs and MPs along with hundreds of party workers participated in the protest.
