A worthy cause

The WORTH (Workshop for Rehabilitation and Training of the Handicapped) Trust, established in the year 1963, is involved in various activities, all aimed at rehabilitation of persons with disabilities. Headquartered at Katpadi, WORTH operates production centres in Katpadi, Pondicherry and Tiruchirapalli which are equipped with modern machinery to produce turned and machined components. There is a plastic injection moulding unit that makes precision components in metal and plastic that are supplied to major industries in the automobile, sanitaryware, electronics and household sectors. The Unit also manufactures assistive devices, in plastic, for the blind.

The Brailler Unit assembles the world famous Perkins Braillers, which are re-exported to the US as well as sold all over the world. The Braillers and other assistive devices for the blind are made available in India below cost price whilst making no compromise on quality. WORTH Trust is the first rehabilitation institution in India to obtain the ISO 9001:2000 certification for five of its Units. WORTH Industries at Tiruchirapalli, Katpadi and Pondicherry & Worth Plastics have also received TS 16949 certification for automobile components.

WORTH places equal emphasis on production of other assistive devices – such as wheel chairs, tricycles, walkers etc to enable persons with disabilities (and the elderly), to barrier-free integration.

Parallel with its industrial activities, WORTH manages three Technical Training Centres, where boys and girls with disability are provided free vocational training in Turner, Machinist, Welder and Electronics trades. A school for children with hearing and speech impairment prepares for integration into regular schools.

From the original pattern developed by IIT, Bombay, WORTH Trust, in collaboration with the Christian Medical College and Hospital,Vellore has developed a very functional electric hand, both Below Elbow and Above Elbow, which is available at a reasonable cost. WORTH also runs an outreach programme to assist persons with disabilities in the villages. On behalf of the Government of Tamil Nadu, WORTH also operates the District Disability Rehabilitation Centre at Tirupattur. As a part of its rehabilitation efforts, WORTH cooperates with the CMC Hospital in running the Day Activity Centre for the Mentally Ill/Mentally Retarded persons.

WORTH is the only rehabilitation organization in India, which is fully self-sustained. The production centres, which emply mostly persons with disabilities, enable them to generate a surplus, with which the entire cost of its technical training, school and outreach activities are met. Registered as a charitable Trust, WORTH is managed by a Board of Trustees made up of eminent persons in diverse fields, united in their common interest in the service of persons with disabilities.
