A dazzling variety available at fair

TIRUCHI: Eye catching textile varieties from various parts of the country worth over Rs. 10 lakh are on display at the annual exhibition organised by the Tamil Nadu Handicrafts Development Corporation at its Poompuhar Showroom in the city in connection with the Deepavali festival. The District Collector, T. Soundiah, declared the exhibition open on Friday.

The attraction of this year’s show are the different special varieties of saris, including handloom, silk cotton, Pochampalli, Jaipur cotton, Andaman silk, Kanchipuram cotton, Karaikudi, Pongai silk saris. The dhotis, also the ones specially made for the Ayyappa devotees, are on display. Thebed spreads and curtains, pillow covers, sofa covers, decorated cloth bags, carpets etc, all specially procured from Jaipur in Rajasthan, have provided added attraction.

Textile varieties ranging from as low a price as Rs. 160 to as high as Rs. 9,000 are on display, according to K. Chidambaranathan, Manager of the Poompuhar Showroom. A discount of 10 per cent is given for all the purchase of textile items made during the festival season, he said and added that it has been targeted to market textiles wroth Rs. 5 lakh through this exhibition.

Apart from the textiles, handicrafts, including Moradabad works, window panels made of rose wood, colourful paintings, icon bangles, brass lamps made in the Handicrafts Corporation production centres at Nachiyarkoil, Madurai, Vagaikulam etc, worth Rs. 20 lakh have also been displayed. The exhibition will be continued till October 26 inclusive of all Sundays.
