7000 join marathon in Madurai

: Nearly seven thousand participants took part in ‘Maduraikkagathan’, a marathon held in the city on Sunday as part of ‘Maamadurai Potruvom’ celebrations scheduled from February 8 to 10.

A large number of students and sports persons participated in the race that was flagged off by Collector Anshul Mishra, Abhay Kumar Singh, Inspector General of Police, South Zone and Karumuttu T. Kannan, president of the organising committee at 7 a.m. at the Railway Stadium in Arasaradi.

The participants were separated into different categories like students, women and the general public. Boys and girls below 18 years of age completed the race at Sethupathi Higher Secondary School and the women completed the race at Sri Meenakshi Government College for Women. The others completed the marathon at Race Course.

All the participants were given certificates and the top 10 finishers in all the categories were given prizes by the Collector, the Inspector General, and Mayor V.V. Rajan Chellappa.

“We expected only five thousand participants. But at least seven thousand people came forward to take part in the event,” said S. Venkatesan, vice-president of the organising committee.
