483 persons with disbalities identified at camp in Karur

KARUR: A disability assessment camp was conducted here on Friday in which a total of 483 persons with varied disability were identified for giving assisting implements. Sponsored by District Handicapped Welfare Society and National Institution for the Development of Multiple Handicapped, the camp drew 591 participants.

Special medical and physiotherapy teams assessed the participants and found 483 of the participants eligible for getting assisting implement such as tricycle, crutch and Braille watches.

While it was assessed that 35 persons would require wheel chairs, 40 would require tricycle, crutch for 55 persons, calipers for 20 persons, spectacles, Braille watch and White Stick for 100 visually challenged persons, CD player for six persons, Braille typewriter for two persons, hearing aid for as many as 128 aurally challenged persons.

That apart it has been suggested that 60 participants at the camp be provided with State assistance to set up economic generation activities.

Collector T.N. Venkatesh and District Rehabilitation Officer C. Jasmine visited the camp and interacted with the participants.

Another camp

A similar camp was held at Krishnarayapuram in which 281 persons with disabilities participated. It has been recommended that 182 persons would get assisting implements.

While 28 persons have been recommended for getting calipers, 30 for tricycles, hearing aid for 73, wheel chair for 20, education and play equipment for 24 mentally retarded children, 15 persons would be given Braille watches.

Representatives of various non governmental organisations participated in the camps.
