VELLORE: A total of 450 children studying in standards VI and VII in Ramamkrishna Aided Middle School in Kosapet and Vellore Vallal N. Krishnaswamy Mudaliar (VVNKM) CBSE (English Medium) School in Vellore participated in the ‘Personal safety for children campaign’ conducted by the New Horizons Committee of the Rotary International District 3230 in connection with the World Day for the Prevention of Child Sexual Abuse on Wednesday.

Saroja Thiruvengadam, District Social Welfare Officer, who was the chief guest, said that child sexual abuse within the family was very common. Therefore, parents have to be counselled to handle the sexual abuse problems of their children.

Teachers too should be counselled to identify children subject to sexual abuse either in the school or at home, by identifying children who are in a depressive mood, and take suitable remedial action. Sudha Umashanker, District Chairperson, New Horizons Committee, R.I. District 3230, said that in the wake of the increasing incidence of child sexual abuse owing to changing lifestyles as a result of which children often found themselves alone, the New Horizons Committee had been working for the last two years to tackle the problem of child sexual abuse.

V.R. Pattabhiraman, Associate Chairman, New Horizons Committee, said that a counselling session for parents on tackling child sexual abuse was conducted by the committee in St. Mary’s School, Vellore last month, while one for teachers was conducted in VVNKM CBSE (English Medium) School a few months ago.

Colourful flyers and pamphlets (containing subtle messages about tackling child sexual abuse) produced by Tulir Centre for Prevention and Healing of Child Sexual Abuse were distributed to the children .
