CHENNAI: Four Indian flights at Chennai were cancelled on Wednesday following strike called by a section the airlines’ employees.

The cancelled flights were Chennai-Mumbai (IC 971), Chennai-Hyderabad (IC 945), Chennai-New Delhi (IC 430) and Chennai-Singapore (IC 555).

Indian authorities also rescheduled some of the flights, which included Chennai-New Delhi (IC 440), which was scheduled to depart at 6.40 a.m. and it left for New Delhi around 11.30 a.m. Similarly, the Chennai-Mumbai flight (IC 969), scheduled to leave around 9.45 a.m. took off around 11.30 a.m., the authorities said.

Members of Air Corporations Employees’ Union (ACEU) in Chennai took out a procession from their office premises at Meenambakkam to the Kamaraj Domestic terminal on Wednesday.Led by its regional secretary, S. Rajkumar, the members shouted slogans demanding revision of their wages, which was pending since 1997.

Similarly, they also demanded the implementation of agreed promotion policy.

In Chennai airport alone, nearly 1,500 employees were working, which included Cabin Crew, Commercial Accountants, Office Assistants, Stores Assistants, sweepers and helpers and all of them joined the strike, Mr. Rajkumar said.
