3 held for stealing cooking oil

CHENNAI, FEB. 26. The Central Crime Branch on Tuesday arrested three youths for allegedly stealing cooking oil after hijacking their employer's lorry in December 2002.

The police said Junide, a lorry owner of Old Washermanpet, had employed Saravanan, Sakthivel and Sundar. In his complaint, Junide said he sent the youths to Vijayawada in December 2002 to collect a consignment of the oil. He instructed them to deliver the oil to a merchant in Coimbatore.

But, the youths took the lorry to Tindivanam and sold 7,000 tonnes of the oil to a merchant for Rs. 2.5 lakhs. They later abandoned the lorry at Ulundurpettai.

On Tuesday evening, the youths were arrested in Foreshore Estate.

The youths shared the money and had been working with a private bus operator.

The police said they were searching for the merchant who purchased the oil.
