2,150 farm labourers arrested

THANJAVUR: About 2,150 members of Tamil Maanila Vivasaya Thozhilalar Sangam affiliated to CPI were arrested by the police in Thanjavur and Tiruvarur districts when they tried to picket State Government offices demanding implementation of Kolappan Committee recommendations for the welfare of farm labourers. At Thanjavur, R.Mutharasan, State general secretary of the Sangam, and C.Chandraskumar, State treasurer, led the agitators near the old bus stand. They were arrested by the police. At Kumbakonam, 42 persons led by union secretary Dhanabal were arrrested. Agitations were held at Sethubavachathiram, Peravurani, Madukkur, Papanasam, Thiruvidaimaruthur, Thirupanandal, Orathanadu, Thiruvonam and Pattukottai.

In Tiruvarur district, 1,200 people including 200 women were arrested.

Pudukottai

As many as 412 Sangam members courted arrest at 11 centres in Pudukottai district. They were all let off later.

Nagapattinam

Nearly 200 agricultural workers were arrested in various parts of Nagapattinam district for picketing before the taluk offices.
