200 police personnel deputed to tsunami-hit villages

NAGERCOIL, MARCH 17 . Around 200 police personnel have been deputed to 48 tsunami-affected villages in the district to attend the high tide-related emergencies, said the Superintendent of Police, Ramasubramani.

Speaking to The Hindu , he said that police vehicles fitted with the public address system and wireless radio system were on standby to alert the people about any emergency. The 200 police personnel have been selected from the Tamil Nadu special police as well as the local police to monitor activities in the coastal areas to check irregularities and provide assistance to local communities.

Moreover, police teams have been sent to all villages including Kanyakumari, Suchindrum, Mondaikadu, Vellichanthai, Manavalakurichi, Colachel, Rajakkamangalam and Keela Manakudi.

The SP said that one unit of the Tamil Nadu Special Police was still in the district since their arrival after the killer waves hit the coastal areas on December 26 last year and the police outposts comprising four constables and a head constable were on duty in all 31 temporary shelters put up for the tsunami-affected fishermen community.
