2 killed, 4 injured in accident

TIRUNELVELI, AUG.14. Two persons were killed and four others injured when a Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation bus ran amok at Tenkasi on Friday night.

According to the police, break failure of the bus, proceeding to Veeranam from Tenkasi, led to the accident when a railway gate was opened after the Tirunelveli-Quilon passenger train crossed the area.

The bus ploughed through a heavy crowd, waiting for the railway gate to be opened, and killed K. Marimuthu (27) of Ayyapuram and N. Essakki (36) of Tenkasi on the spot, after knocking down their two-wheelers.

The bus also hit three more bikes, a pushcart and a cow, injuring S. Mariappan (53) and J. Murugavel (40) of Tenkasi, E. Murugesan (35) of Kudiyiruppu and Senthil (32) of Maththalampaarai.

The victims were taken to the Tenkasi Government Hospital. Murugavel was referred to the Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital.

The Tenkasi police arrested the bus driver, Devadasan (50), of North Vaagaikulam under the Maanur police station limits.
