1-year jail for bigamy

A Metropolitan Magistrate Court, Saidapet, here on Friday sentenced a man to one-year rigorous imprisonment for marrying for the second time when his first marriage subsisted.

V.Sundaram , graphic designer of a television channel, was tried by the city police following a complaint from his wife Janaki, whom he married in 1989.

Alleging dowry harassment by her husband, she left her matrimonial house and filed a divorce petition in the Family Court. But he persuaded her to withdraw the case.

Later, he married Geetha and started living with her. When the complainant questioned her husband about the second marriage, he threatened her. Hence, she preferred the compliant against Sundaram and Geetha.

Holding the duo as guilty, M. Anandavel, XVIII Metropolitan Magistrate sentenced them to one year imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs.1,000 each. — Staff Reporter
