KOZHIKODE: Violence continued unabated in the city on the second day on Wednesday with the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), the trade wing of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) attacking the office and assaulting the workers of the All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), a feeder organisation of the Communist Party of India, on the South Beach here in the morning.

According to the city police, 16 workers of the AITUC were injured in the attack by the activists of the CITU. Two of them have been admitted at the Kozhikode Medical College, nine at the Government Beach General Hospital while the rest with minor injuries have been discharged after administering first aid. The attack is reported to be a sequel to the clash between the two Left trade unions on Tuesday.

At least 15 persons were injured in the clash between CITU and AITUC and the subsequent police action on Tuesday. A quarrel between the unions over the “turn system” at the lorry stand on the South beach ignited the clash. The AITUC workers alleged that the CITU activists were charging excess levy on movement of goods and were trying to bully them. However, the CITU said that the AITUC was attempting to run a parallel agency for collection of charges. A few workers had also resigned from the CITU and joined the AITUC.

Sensing another around of clashes on the second day a contingent of police was deployed near the office of the AITUC. Around 150 CITU activists attacked the office at around 10.45 a.m. The furniture of the office were destroyed and the workers inside assaulted. The tiles were also destroyed in the heavy stone pelting. Later, the AITUC and CPI district level leaders accused the police of being partial in controlling the violent agitators. The police remained spectators to the vandalism, they charged.

A case has been registered at the Town police station. In the afternoon, the CPI and AITUC activists took out a march to the Town station demanding action against the culprits. CPI leaders including T.V.Balan, K.G.Pankajakshan and I.V.Sasankan participated.

On Tuesday, SFI activists attacked the office of the Veda Vyasa Trust and the Calicut Institute of Engineering Technology at Chalappuram. Around 35 persons including 11 police personnel sustained injures in the incident. The lack of enthusiasm on the part of the police to take strong action against the protestors led to widespread destruction of the office. Over 25 computers and peripherals and office furniture were destroyed in the attack.
