Nagercoil: The Public Works Department has taken up a study on implementing 11 water supply schemes during the current year in Kanyakumari district.
A detailed project report for comprehensive water supply scheme (CWSS) to coastal habitations in the district for Rs.28.02 crore and for Kuzhithurai CWSS at an estimated cost of Rs.14 crore have been approved by the Government.
The Government has technically sanctioned the project report for Alagappapuram town panchayat, costing Rs.42.16 lakh.
According to sources, the investigation works for the construction of a treatment unit of CWSS to Padmanabhapuram municipality, Thiruvithancode, Kattathurai, Valvachagottam and Mulagumoodu town panchayats and Mulagumoodu water supply scheme would be taken up after identifying suitable sites in co-ordination with the district administration.
The additional water source to Nagercoil municipality — the construction of Ulakkaruviyar dam — has been taken up by the Public Works Department. Regarding phase-II work, i.e. laying of pipeline from Ulakkaruviyar dam to the treatment plant at Nagercoil, a project report for Rs.8.50 crore has been submitted to the Chief Engineer, Madurai.
For Kalliakkavilai, Methukummal CWSS and Kollencode Ezhudesam CWSS, the treatment plant site in Kulappuram village in Vilavancode taluk belonging to Panaivela Cooperative Society has been identified and action was being taken to buy the land.
The Government has allotted Rs.3.26 crore for the implementation of integrated protected water supply scheme for the benefit of people belonging to Kadayal special- grade village panchayat.
Potable water would be distributed to people belonging to more than 20 habitations. The works for the implementation of the project were going on and would be completed at the earliest.
Similarly a sum of Rs.2.23 crore has been allotted by the Government for execution of a drinking water project at Arumanai special-grade panchayat for the benefit of people belonging to 15 habitations. The population benefited would be 14,576 persons. The scheme is under a trial run and the expenditure incurred so far is Rs.1.56 crore.
A protected combined water supply scheme for which Rs.12.86 crore has been allotted for the implementation of comprehensive drinking water supply scheme for the benefit of people belonging to more than 97 habitations in Verkilambi, Ponmanai, Kulasekaram, Kothanallur, Kumarapuram, Vilavoor and Neyoor special grade village panchayats and 26 wayside habitations, benefiting 1.19 lakh persons.
The scheme hasbeen completed and water supply effected to all these special -grade village panchayats and a trial run was under progress for Neyoor special grade village panchayat.
The expenditure incurred so far is Rs.13.54 crore.
