Consignment has been valued at Rs. 50,000

About 100 kilograms of sea cucumber was seized at coastal Kottaipattinam village in the district by the Marine Police on Thursday. The Marine Police detained N. Sulaiman (52) of Kottaipattinam in connection with the seizure.

Coastal Security Group sources said a team headed by Tiruppunavasal Marine Police Sub Inspector Raghupathy and Manamelkudi Marine Police Sub Inspector Jawahar seized the sea cucumber, an endangered species covered under Schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act, near the Kottaipattinam jetty in the morning.

The consignment was found stacked inside gunny bags when the Marine Police personnel went to the spot, the sources said. The seized consignment and Sulaiman were later handed over to the Forest Department for further legal action.

The value of the seized consignment was put at Rs. 50,000. Sulaiman had allegedly collected the sea cucumber from the fishermen and was planning to export it, the sources added.
