100 huts gutted at Vyasarpadi

CHENNAI SEPT. 21. A man and his son were charred to death and another person died of shock in a fire which broke out at Sanjay Nagar at Vyasarpadi in the small hours of today. The police said Samuel (45) and his son Douglas (23) were charred to death on the spot, while Murugan (50) died after a heart attack.

According to fire services personnel, fire broke out at one of the huts on Ponnappa Mudali Street, Sanjay Nagar at Vyasarpadi at about 1.30 a.m. Aided by winds, the fire soon spread in the entire area, destroying more than 100 huts, a mechanic shed, a small church, and a poultry shop, apart from a few vehicles. Samuel and Douglas, who were fast asleep, woke up after the fire broke out.

However, they swooned after they inhaled the smoke and were trapped inside their hut. As a result, they were charred to death.

Murugan, one of their neighbours, died of heart attack due to the shock, according to eyewitnesses. Vasanthakumari, wife of Samuel, and their other children Salomi and Christopher sustained injuries and were taken to the KMC Hospital.

Fire service personnel said that 11 fire tenders from Vyasarpadi, Korukkupet and Esplanade stations were deployed at the spot. Further, 15 private water tankers were also pressed into service and they struggled for one hour to put out the flames. As the approach road was very narrow, firemen found it difficult to get very close to the accident spot. Sources also said that authorities arranged for alternative accommodation for the affected people and that food packets were also distributed to them.
