Students from 180 colleges participate in the exercise

TIRUCHI: Only 10 candidates received call letters from Hyderabad-based GE Energy after a two-day campus interview conducted under the aegis of Anna University Centre for University-Industry Collaboration (CUIC) at J.J. College of Engineering and Technology here last week.

As many as 926 students from 180 engineering colleges in the State took part; but only 73 could get through the written examination. The company settled for 10 candidates after a personal interview that lasted for about an hour for each candidate.

The successful candidates were chosen as `Graduate Engineer Trainees' with a salary of Rs. 3.3 lakh a year, the highest ever offer in the campus interviews organised under Tamil Nadu State-Level Placement Programme by CUIC so far. It was the first campus interview held under the collaboration for 2007. Students of Electrical and Electronics; Electronics and Instrumentation; and Instrumentation and Control Engineering streams were considered eligible for attending the campus interview.

The company was reportedly not impressed by the communicative ability and soft skills of most of the candidates, despite the fact that the participants were confined to those who secured 60 percent and above in their 10th and 12th standards, and an average of above 70 percent from semester I to VI. The company had raised the bar further and chose only the best performers in the written test for the interview.

Training programme

With a view to enabling students to excel in the campus interviews, Anna University commenced an experimental training programme in communication, soft skills, leadership and team building in colleges in association with Cognizant Technology Solutions. Colleges were clustered and 58 institutions were covered under the programme in 2006, said P. Mannar Jawahar, Director, CUIC. The programme will be extended to the rest of the affiliated colleges during the current year.
