`Nilgiris district ahead in photo electoral rolls'

Udhagamandalam: In the preparation of photo-affixed electoral rolls, the Nilgiris is faring well, said the Chief Electoral Officer Naresh Gupta, here on Saturday.

He told presspersons that the Nilgiris was among the top 15 districts, having covered 88.64 percent so far.

Expressing confidence that it would touch the 95 percent mark within a few weeks, he added that the draft rolls for the district would be published during the first week of April.

Pointing out that the draft rolls would be published in batches in a phased manner till the end of April, he added that along with the Nilgiris, those of Perambalur, Thiruvarur, Karur, Kanyakumari, Erode, Thanjavur, Vellore, Pudukottai, Nagapattinam, Dindigul, Salem, Namakkal, Ramanathapuram and Virudhunagar would also be released.

With coverage of 98 percent, Dindigul was now standing first in the State. Though the authorities concerned had been instructed to ensure that there were no omissions, some minor lapses could not be ruled out while dealing with an electorate of about 4.50 crores.

If, after all the efforts were made, officials were not able to obtain the photographs of some of the voters, their names would be deleted after making local enquiries.

Earlier, reviewing the progress made in preparing the photo-affixed electoral rolls in the Nilgiris at a meeting held here, he urged the officials to finish the task as early as possible. Nilgiris Collector Santosh K.Misra partcipated.
