Odisha to reward people returning plastic bottles

A high-level meeting held under the chairmanship of Chief Secretary A.P. Padhi here on Thursday discussed modalities to implement the ban from October 2. Among other things, the possibility of rewarding people who returned plastic containers and empty packets of Orissa State Cooperative Milk Producers’ Federation after use was explored. “People will be paid on returning the OMFED packets and plastic bottles,” Forest and Environment Additional Chief Secretary Suresh Mohapatra said after the meeting.

The government is likely to come up with a draft notification prohibiting use of plastic in the State by August-end following a directive issued by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik to ban use of plastic and polythene containers from October 2.

“We will publish a draft notification banning use of plastic under Environment (Protection) Act, 1986 by August-end. We will solicit public opinion on the notification within 15 days. We hope to finalise the notification by September 15,” said Mr. Mohapatra. The plastic ban will come into force from five corporations — Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Sambalpur, Rourkela and Berhampur.
