PUDUCHERRY: In yet another incident related to gang rivalry, an accused in a “hurt case” was murdered near his house in Anitha Nagar at Ok Palayam on Wednesday. The victim, Parasuraman (26), was attacked by a 10-member gang with sharp weapons.

Superintendent of Police (South) K. Arumugahm told The Hindu that Parasuraman was stabbed first with a sharp weapon and a country bomb thrown at him. He died on the spot.

Parasuraman was the brother of Gandhi, a history-sheeter, who was found murdered a few months ago near a railway track. Mr. Arumugahm said that the culprits who attacked Parasuraman came on a two-wheeler and in an autorickshaw.

They left behind the two-wheeler for some mechanical problem. According to eyewitness, three men who came on the two-wheeler attacked Parasuraman while the others who came in the autorickshaw were watching. Some of them escaped on a bus plying between Puducherry and Cuddalore.

Mr. Arumugham said, “We are yet to ascertain whether they escaped by bus. But we have seized the two-wheeler from the spot. We are trying to find out whether the Tamil Nadu registration number found on the vehicle is real.”

Cases were registered against 10 known persons and a few others following details provided by witnesses. The main accused, Veeraiyan, a history-sheeter, had come out on bail 10 days ago, Mr. Arumugham said.

Though the motive could not be ascertained at this stage, it might be related to the case involving the murder of his brother, Mr. Arumugham added.

Tension prevailed for sometime as relatives of Parasuraman tried to block traffic on Cuddalore Road. The police chased them away and restored normality. According to the police, four accused surrendered in a local court in the evening.

They would be taken into custody for interrogation.
