Help make 2nd green revolution a success in Odisha: Naveen

The Odisha government on Wednesday urged the Centre to take effective measures to realise the unsaturated agricultural potential of the State and to make the second green revolution a success in the eastern region of the country.

The demands of the State with regard to agriculture were taken up before Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik in New Delhi.

In order to the make the second green revolution a success in the State it was necessary to provide timely and adequate support to agriculture and horticulture and create necessary infrastructure, Mr. Patnaik told Mr. Pawar.

Mr. Patnaik told Mr. Pawar that Odisha to date had only one Agricultural University —the Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT), which was established in 1962 — and urged him to take steps for establishing a Central agricultural university to serve the needs of Odisha, particularly the KBK districts.

The Chief Minister highlighted that Odisha had been adjudged one of the best performing States in the National Conference on Horticulture held at New Delhi in February this year. However, six districts of the State — Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Boudh and Jharsuguda — were yet to be covered under the National Horticulture Mission Programme, he said, while requesting Mr. Pawar to approve the six districts for inclusion under the NHMP.

Supply of fertilizers

About supply of chemical fertilizers to the State, Mr. Patnaik said that the State had suffered in recent years on account of inadequate allocation and supply of chemical fertilizers.

For the kharif 2012, the State's actual requirement was 10.38 lakh MTs which should be met in full to sustain the momentum of agricultural development, he said.

Mr. Patnaik also requested Mr. Pawar for allocating the indented quantities of breeder seeds of paddy, moong, biri and groundnut for kharif 2012 for the State.
