Anna brigade seeks power sops

Members of Anna brigade came up with 10 demands before the private power distribution company, Southco, on Friday.

Secretary of Odisha unit of Anna brigade, Srikant Padhi said, they have decided to start dharna and hunger strike in front of the office of the Revenue Divisional Commissioner (RDC), southern division in the city from February 18, if their demands were not fulfilled. “Our demands are related to common people, who are facing vagaries of privatisation of power sector in Odisha,” Mr Padhi said.

On Friday, members of the Anna brigade led by Mr Padhi, met the general manager of the Southco and handed over the memorandum containing the 10 demands. They also held discussions with the GM. The demands included subsidy of at least 30 per cent per unit for power consumers in the State and provision of free electricity to farmers. They wanted non-collection of power dues from consumers in Phailin cyclone-hit Ganjam and Gajapati districts for at least two months. They alleged that after the cyclone the company had failed to provide proper service for two months. As per them, the restoration work after Phailin was of low standard and at most places the power supply network was in a precarious condition.
