Jyotiraditya targets senior leader

BHOPAL: The Congress Member of Parliament from Guna, Jyotiraditya Scindia, on Saturday targeted party general secretary Digvijay Singh, describing him as a senior Congress leader who should now start playing the role of Bhishma Pitamaha. Mr. Scindia was talking to journalists in Gwalior before leaving for Jaora in Morena district to address a Congress rally.

Blaming Mr. Singh for the party's defeat in the last Assembly elections, Mr. Scindia said that before the 2003 elections, Mr. Singh had said the Congress did not need the votes of those belonging to the "upper castes and Government employees." He had followed this up by accusing the farmers of stealing electricity and as a result the Congress was wiped out in the elections.

On Mr. Singh's political rally at Sagar on February 15, Mr. Scindia said the Congress high command had put a ban on all rallies being organised in the State without prior approval of the party general secretary in charge of Madhya Pradesh or the State party unit.

He said such rallies would damage the Congress party and fall within the ambit of disciplinary action. Reiterating complete faith in the leadership of party president Sonia Gandhi, he said everyone in the Congress should unite under her leadership.

Mr. Scindia said his only goal was to crusade against BJP "misrule."
