BHUBANESWAR: Bhubaneswarites on Wednesday woke up to news of ghastly double murder as a youth went berserk killing parents of a girl whom he reportedly loved.

In the early morning the denizens of Behera Sahi in the Capital City were shocked to see a couple in a pool of blood and the assailant was nabbed with a weapon in his hand. The deceased were identified as Dinabandhu Pal and Shantilata Pal.

According to the police, the accused person, Mahendra Khamari alias Muna, a school dropout, reportedly loved the girl of the victims.

In the past Danabandhu Pal had several times confronted with Muna for his overtures. Even he had informed the police about the activities of Muna. Shantilata became the first victim of Muna while she was sweeping outside road of her house. Eyewitnesses said the accused person stabbed the women four to five times. Hearing screams of his wife, Danabandhu Pal went out and he too was not spared.

When Uma Shankar Parija, neighbour of the victims, came to the rescue, he was also attacked. Ahalya Khuntia, Mr. Parija’s wife, too sustained injuries. Meanwhile, Muna was overpowered by passersby with help of Mr. Parija.

The Pal couple succumbed to their injuries while being taken to hospital.

Muna was arrested by the city police.

The double murder took place less than 24 hours after a youth was lynched to death by women in Salia Sahi, the largest slum.
