Woman Maoist remanded to custody

BHUBANESWAR: Saswati Das, wife of dreaded naxal leader Sabyasachi Panda, was sent to Jharapada Special Jail after her bail plea was rejected by Judicial Magistrate First Class, Banapur on Monday.

The five-day remand secured by State Crime Branch ended on Monday, The crime branch did not plead for extension of the remand period. However it urged to examine Saswati alias Mili Panda in future.

Remanding Saswati to judicial custody, the JFMC directed the police to take prior permission of lawyer of the member of women before further interrogation. The security around Jharpada special jail here has been tightened in wake of this high profile inmate. Along with Saswati, Kishore Jena, another alleged member of CPI (Maoist) was also remanded to judicial custody. Wife of Sabyasachi Panda was believed to be heading media and publicity wing of banned outfit. Police sources said Saswati was very active member in the organisation and had contacts with central committee members.

On January 15, personnel of Special Operation Group tracked down Saswati who was staying like another urbanite on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar. Police had also arrested Jayakrushna Champati, a printer and close aide of Sabyasachi Panda on charges of supplying different materials to cadre of CPI (Maoist).
