Wife of first Himachal Chief Minister dead

SHIMLA: Satyawati Parmar, wife of the first Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh Y. S. Parmar, died here on Tuesday evening. She was 88.

An asthma patient with a history of heart ailments, she was admitted to hospital on Monday.

Ms. Parmar was a renowned social worker and a senior Congress leader and had played an important role along with her husband in the creation of Himachal Pradesh as an independent State. She also worked for uplift of hill women.

State Governor Urmila Singh, Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal, Opposition Leader Vidya Stokes and Communist Party of India (M) State Secretary Rakesh Singha have expressed grief at her demise.
