Uncleared garbage adds to the problem

PUDUCHERRY: Stagnating rainwater along with heaps of garbage has turned into an eyesore near the Jawaharlal Nehru statue, at the Gandhi Thidal on the Beach Road. The spot, which is frequented by tourists and residents of Puducherry, is in a sorry state for want of immediate attention.

Garbage, including plastics, has been dumped alongside the statue. With heavy rains lashing Puducherry, rainwater stagnation has worsened the condition of the area.

Beach Road houses a number of mobile eateries and the handicraft bazaar. Waste from the eateries has been dumped in the corner.

Officials of the Puducherry Municipality said that there was no permission for the mobile outlets to function near Nehru Statue. Garbage clearance in the Raj Bhavan ward was being carried out by a non-governmental organisation and steps to maintain cleanliness would be taken, they added.
